Modified Car or Bike, Modified Insurance? November 25, 2007
If you’ve got a modified or “modded” car or bike, you probably already know that finding insurance can be a costly affair.
Every vehicle modification must be declared on your insurance policy or an insurer could refuse to pay out in the event of a claim.
It can be surprising to find out what insurers class as a vehicle modification – everything from new performance air filters to sports bucket seats to alloy wheels. In fact, changing anything from the original manufacturer specifications is considered a “mod” and any such change alters your insurance premium.
With some modifications you might think that you should get cheaper car insurance. For example, if you add
ABS brakes to your car, the insurance should be cheaper as the car is safer. Unfortunately insurers don’t see it this
way! Their statistics show that any modifications mean a car is more likely to be involved in an accident or be stolen by thieves. Not what you would expect by having a safer car…
